Electrochemical corrosion of metals refers to the corrosion of metals in an electrolyte solution due to electrochemical reactions. It is characterized by the following: in the corrosion process at the same time there are two relatively independent reaction process, namely, the anodic reaction and cathodic reaction, accompanied by the generation of electric current in the reaction process. Corrosion of metals in acids, alkalis and salts are all electrochemical corrosion.
According to the electrochemical definition, the electrode with the lower electrode potential is called the negative electrode and the electrode with the higher electrode potential is called the positive electrode. The electrode at which the oxidation reaction occurs is called the anode and the electrode at which the reduction reaction occurs is called the cathode. Electrochemically the two electrodes of a battery are named by cathode and anode.
